Harari thinks that 70,000 years ago, a random genetic mutation then enabled Sapiens to suddenly evolve new cognitive capacities. He calls this the Cognitive Revolution. Harari notes that animals in nature can only respond to physical phenomena, but Sapiens learned how to make up fictional ideas and believe in things that aren’t actually in the physical world.

Sapiens is based on a series of lectures Harari gave in Jerusalem in the early 2010s, and it reads in fact like a bunch of TED Talks bundled together. The author (a historian specialised in medieval crusades, to begin with) sounds well versed in all sorts of disciplines: palaeontology, anthropology, history, economics and social sciences and a Humanism is a belief that Homo sapiens has a unique and sacred nature, which is fundamentally different from the nature of all other animals and of all other phenomena. Humanists believe that the unique nature of Homo sapiens is the most important thing in the world, and it determines the meaning of everything that happens in the universe. The philosophy of Sapiens Sapiens arrives at the idea that what separates human beings from all other animals is the ability to construct “myths.” At first glance, this may seem reasonable.
